Australian rider to compete in home round on Yamaha.

Anthony West will be on the grid for the opening round of the 2016 FIM Supersport World Championship at Phillip Island in Australia next February. Although he is yet to confirm his plans for the whole season, the Australian is looking forward to a link-up with sponsor X50Green Tea to be able to race in Round 1 of the new season.

“I believe I can still win races and so does my sponsor, which has given me its support to take part in this race,” West tells WorldSBK.com, having already asked fans on Instagram to attend the event for extra support. “The rider, the equipment and the sponsor are all Australian,” he continues.

“My only objective is to get there and win the race! I would like to think I could do the full season but, with no real support from a factory or any other sponsors other than X50Green Tea, it looks limited to Australia for now. I’m looking for a full-time ride for 2016, but so far I don’t have one.”

The 34-year-old has in past seasons won Grands Prix in the 250 and Moto2 classes of the MotoGP World Championship, most recently at Assen in 2014. Now he is highly keep to race full time in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship.

“I think it’s a great championship and I’d like to have the opportunity to race in the World Superbike category,” he begins to sum up. “I’m better on a 1,000cc machine than I am on a 600.”

Next season, World Supersport retains its Sunday race format. However, qualifying will sport a new-look as the category adopts a Superpole session similar to that of the WorldSBK premier class.
